Top reviews from the United States

  • Amazon Customer5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and Efficient!Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2025Color: Polished Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseNice unit, really quiet and really good air flow on high for a hepa filter. The size is just right. It’s been on for a month collecting lots of dust and no problems. The orange light comes on when I light a candle so I know it’s working. The air smells better and I notice less dust. So far it’s worked great. Opened the box, inserted the filter and turned it on. Easy enough.

  • Victor Alvarez5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Air Purifier with Smart FeaturesReviewed in the United States on September 22, 2025Color: Polished Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseThis purifier makes a big difference in air quality. It’s powerful enough for a large room, runs quietly on the lower settings, and the auto mode adjusts the fan speed based on air quality. The filters are easy to replace, and the app support is a great bonus—I can check air quality and control the unit from my phone. After just a few days, I noticed less dust and fresher air. Highly recommend if you want an effective, user-friendly air purifier.

  • Outdoorsman5.0 out of 5 stars Worth.Every.PennyReviewed in the United States on October 2, 2025Color: Polished Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseI am a crazy person when it comes to air quality. My apartment has a dirt basement underneath and occasional mold/mildew spawns have tormented me for 2 years. I used a preowned Winix5500-3 for a while but was never satisfied with the smell or freshness even with new filters(they were knockoff filters) , i think the inside of the machine was dirty. Worked okay for a long time but it always had an odd smell (like chips or a dirty vacuum bag) even with new filters, anyway it was time for a replacement. While smaller than my old one, this 5510 moves more air, takes up less space and really, truly makes the air seem cool and fresh, right out of the box. Im blown away. The carbon filter is actually little honeycombs filled with charcoal pellets instead of crappy “charcoal fibres” whatever the imaginary stuff was with the mystery brand replacements (not from Winix). The mesh on the prefilter is a finer weave. Winix really did improve on the design. The output blows mostly straight up for uniform dispersion, instead of the old one that blows over to the right of the machine. But the best part of all (yes i realize i sound like a complete mental case) is the noise it makes. it is a glorious, heavenly soft white noise on low and medium, even 3 is a nice sound, its like the gentle “whoosh” of central air, or like the vents in a doctors office. If you are sensitive to noise or want something you can sleep while its running, this is your saving grace. I got a G*rmGuardian one that im returning because the fan noise is awful and high pitched on all the settings. I got a great night’s sleep last 2 nights and did not wake up stuffy or brain fogged out, I am convinced this purifier helped! The WiFi feature is great, and I use it like a remote. Highly recommend!

  • E L4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but there are some odditiesReviewed in the United States on March 27, 2025Color: Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseI bought several of these to keep the air clean in different parts of my home. They seem to work well. The filters get dirty so it’s definitely pulling it from the air. The carbon filter seem to reduce smells. On low speed, it’s quiet and you can barely tell it’s running.

    But…there are some oddities

The unit is supposed to detect the air quality and adjust as necessary. Sometimes, if I’m sitting in same room, the Winix will just turn red indicating bad air and switch to high. It does this for no apparent reason and no, a dust tornado did not just come sweeping through my room. It will blow on high for a few minutes, then drop back to status blue.

The other oddity is that while the manual states that it should have a remote, it did not come with one. But, the 5500-2 seems to have an infrared receiver because apparently certain buttons on my TV remote will send it into a tailspin. It goes from auto to manual at full speed. I have not yet figured out what button on the TV remote is doing this. If I can find the infrared receiver on the Winix, I’ll block it will a piece of tape so this doesn’t continue to happen

  • writersblock735.0 out of 5 stars Keeps Wildfire Smoke OutsideReviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024Color: Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseWe’ve had one heck of a fire season this year–and if you live in the Western United States, I can already see you nodding your head in agreement. That’s probably why you’re here reading this review. Thank goodness for air purifiers. Chances are you’ve already looked at tons of them. You might even be confused as to which one to choose. Hopefully I can help you out with that.

In essence, all an air purifier has to do is filter the air and expel it in better shape than it inhaled it. Most units (including the Winix unit here) do this by pulling the air through a HEPA filter–and that certainly helps. If all you’re looking to do is reduce dust, you can stop here. Pick a filter, any filter. You’ll get the job done.

But why stop with one layer of filtration when this unit offers you four?

When the air enters your Winix, it will first encounter a cleanable dust screen. This screen is much like what you may have in front of your computer case fans. Large particles get stuck here rather than in your HEPA filter, meaning you won’t have to replace the HEPA as often. In fact, Winix recommends replacing the HEPA once a year; you may have noticed that other brands recommend changing filters every three months or so. That’s why, and it serves as Layer One.

The next layer is a honeycomb filter which is filled with activated carbon. You see, HEPA filters alone won’t eliminate odors. Just like how activated carbon will remove odors from fish tanks when used as part of the tank’s filtration, it also removes odors from the air. Pet dander, wildfire smoke, a certain someone’s love of gassy foods… yeah, you’ll like this function. That’s Layer Two.

Layer Three is the HEPA filter itself. Small particles you may not be able to see–but will still do a number on your eyes and sinuses–get stopped in their tracks here.

Layer Four is a negative-ion filter that Winix calls “Plasmawave.” Without over complicating the science behind it, this feature will make it harder for viruses to spread and will cause smaller particles to sink where they can be collected easier. This feature can be turned off if you don’t see the need for such thoroughness or perhaps you’re skeptical of the process, but I strongly suggest leaving it on.

When it’s time to change (or clean, in the case of your dust screen) your filters, getting to them is easy. The entire front panel is held on by magnets (better than plastic tabs which can break over time). The filters themselves are easy to find right here on Amazon, and they are reasonably priced. You’ll be switched over in minutes. Your biggest hassle just might be tearing your new filters out of its packaging.

Now let’s talk about features. For the vast majority of the people, simply hitting the “auto” button will work. This unit has an air quality sensor, and it will automatically increase its fan speed when it senses that your air quality has declined. Once air quality improves, it’ll slow down its fans. It’s a set-and-forget type of thing.

For those who are more hands-on, you can bypass the auto mode and choose your own fan speed. This is useful if you’re running this unit in a room that needs more “reach,” or if you find the white noise of the fans to be soothing. On maximum speed, the unit is still quiet enough to hold a conversation next to it—a box fan is far, far louder. The filtered air is pushed upward, where it can more easily circulate in the room without diluting the denser polluted air it has yet to filter. This helps the purifier do a more efficient job.

The air quality monitor lets you know what your room’s air quality is by showing you one of three colors: Blue means your air quality is good; Amber means it’s… well… mediocre; Red means bad. Pretty easy stuff, and easy to see from across the room. The various functions and features are backlit, so even in a dark room you won’t have any trouble selecting what you want. For those who are bothered by the indicator lights, there’s a night-time mode which turns them off.

The unit itself is well thought-out and constructed. It doesn’t draw attention to itself, and will blend with most any decor. There’s no remote control that you’ll never use, and the controls are so well laid-out you’ll very likely never need to go digging around for the manual.

My brother-in-law owns this unit, and it was on his recommendation that we ordered ours. We liked our first one so much, we quickly bought a second unit to go in our daughter’s bedroom. The difference has been striking. Now we only have to deal with wildfire smoke when we venture outside. The dry eyes and sniffles have reduced dramatically. If that sounds like the kind of world you wish to create for yourself in your own home, why not place your order today?

  • B. Osler5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for smoke, vape and dustReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2025Color: Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseI’m very happy with this air purifier. I have a cat and it visibly picks up a lot of hair, that must just be floating around in the air; hair that would normally go unnoticed.

I started using a Levoit LV-PUR 131 machine a couple of years ago to remove the smell of vaped marijuana flower (prescribed medical). I love the smell myself, but I know how many don’t, and I’m a considerate neighbour.
I’ve had the Winix for 3 months now, and it is far superior to the Levoit model, which has now been demoted to hallway duties.

I like the washable pre-filter, although I’ve not actually had to wash it yet. I find that a good going over with a vacuum once a week, to remove all the large debris, is enough. I vacuum the charcoal filter too.
As I’ve said, my primary reason for using an air purifier was never to remove dust but this is a big bonus, and there is visibly less dust now.

The sensor detects VOCs much better than smoke, and for anyone using it for smoke or weed should be aware of this. I just keep it on setting three most of the time, which works very well for cigarette smoke and marijuana vape. Setting 3 on the Winix is quieter than setting 1 on the Levoit. Setting 3 is my “go to” setting. It’s really not noisy at all. For smoke, leaving it on “auto” doesn’t work, but manually setting it to 3 does. The same is true of marijuana flower vape.

The turbo mode (4th speed) is VERY loud but unnecessary for normal use. I occasionally give it a blast, just to clear the air quickly, and it’s very effective for this. I have a large living room, and 10 minutes on turbo will just clear anything quickly.

The one niggle I have is that when I want to leave it on, as I retire to bed, I have a practical choice of setting 3 for 4 hours, or turbo for an hour – the timer does 1, 4 or 8 hours. It would be more useful for my purposes, if I could choose 1, 2, and 4 hours. Ideally, I’d like to be able to leave it on setting 3 for 2 hours, but that’s not possible.

I leave the Plasmawave mode on because on or off, I don’t notice any difference. People have talked about it making occasional snapping noises, but I’ve never heard anything.
Unbranded filter sets are about 20 quid, so in practice, I change them every two months. Winix say the charcoal filter will last for a lot longer as it is washable, but TBH washing and drying is too much faff for me.
Lastly… it LOOKS better than the Levoit, which has turned yellow from UV light, like many white/off-white plastics.

I’m very happy with this Winix machine. From research and experience, I now think that it’s probably the best in the UK home market, for smoke and vape.

    [Update: Aug 25]

I’m still very happy with the performance. I’ve discovered that because I’ve been smoking rollies (tobacco) near the unit, a sticky film develops on the pre-filter. In fact, the surrounding black plastic is also sticky. I think it’s nicotine. Anyway, I just laid the filter down in the bath, and went gently over it with some water and a little washing up liquid. This did the trick. Good as new.

Another trick I’ve found is that the carbon filter is exactly half the depth of the Hepa filter, so it is possible to fit three carbon filters, and no Hepa filter. Of course, from the POV of smoke and vape removal, this is not, as one might think, three times the effectiveness, but rather 197% the smoke-reducing power (according to ChatGPT) – something to do with layer passing. That’s still almost twice as effective. It doesn’t get the fine dust through, that’s just blown back into the room. I use this air purifier in the room where I smoke and vape. Just around the corner, in my hallway, I have another Winix with a Hepa filter. That one gets the dust.

  • Michel F5.0 out of 5 stars What’s not to likeReviewed in Canada on December 27, 2023Color: Charcoal GrayPattern Name: Air PurifierVerified PurchaseI just got this air purifier a few days ago so this review is not about long term use or efficacy. So far I love it. It looks and sounds cool and very modern and more importantly it works well with no smells, no fumes, etc. It’s easy to understand and move around with the handle on top. I initially set it on automatic and since the air seemed clean, the fan was staying on slow speed or going in sleep mode (very slow). Since this unit is used in a basement with concrete flooring and 2 cats around with litter, I manually set it on fan speed 3 and leave it there throughout the daytime. On rare occasions the air quality light will turn amber for a few minutes and then turn to blue again so I guess it’s doing what it’s supposed to do. Even on speed 3, I can hardly hear it. I can look and listen at the TV a few feet from the unit with no problems.

The only thing I didn’t like was the very lousy manual that comes with it. The writing is ridiculously small. They mention how to clean the screen filter (first one) but not how to clean the carbon one. I went on online to find out. It’s pretty simple. I don’t care or need the remote but it’s there for those who might. I get the feeling most people will lose it anyway.

The online reviews seem to agree that this is a great air purifier and so far I really like it. A review mentioned that it was made in Korea. Mine is not. It’s made in Thailand according to sticker on the box.
