I had one about 15 years ago that tore up my face. I bought a Norelco to replace that one which I retired when I got this one. After 2 months of use I just now need to recharge it so the battery life is excellent. I shave every 1-3 days and this thing works great. I wouldn’t want to try shaving more than 3 day, old man stubble. The sideburn trimmer is usable, not great, but I have other tools for that. My tip is shave before washing your face or showering. The natural skin oils allow for a very close shave without razor burn.

I finally decided to treat myself, and I’m glad I did. Like any shaver, there is a break-in period, so don’t expect the best shave of your life the first couple times you use this, but after a week of use, my face got used to it and now it provides the closest, most comfortable shave I’ve ever experienced with an electric. I don’t even need to use any pre-shave products. I can hop out of the shower, dry off my face and shave smoothly without any irritation. This is the first Braun unit I’ve owned where (with a couple exceptions) I get a good shave on a single pass. The exceptions are a couple of stubborn spots around my jaw line, but that’s to be expected. It’s nice not to have to go over the same areas repeatedly which can lead to irritation.
I was especially eager to try a shaver with a cleaning/charging station, and this really contributes to the overall value despite the higher price tag of this model. I will say, the first time I ran the cleaning process, when I removed the shaver from the base an hour later, it was still pretty wet with the solution. However, this seemed to have been a one-time thing, because I’ve been using the base every two days for the past month or so and it has worked flawlessly every time since. I love the fresh, clean scent the cleaning solution leaves behind, and it also lubricates the foils just enough for a smooth shave without excessive oiliness. I’ve been removing the shave head, dumping out the excess hair and cleaning the inside of the shaver with a brush as I’ve read this helps ensure a good, thorough cleaning and prevent hair from building up and clogging the base.
I haven’t had the opportunity to travel with my new Braun yet, but I think the smart case that charges the shaver is a stroke of genius and I can’t wait to try it. I have a business trip coming up in a few weeks so I’ll get a chance to bring my new shaver along with me. It’ll be great not to need to bring the charging cable, or charge it up before leaving and hope you have enough juice to last you the trip. The case should provide ample power for the four days I’ll be on my trip.
Overall, if you’ve been buying the cheaper Braun models or using other inexpensive electric shavers and you’re thinking of upgrading, this model is well worth considering. I’m extremely pleased with mine!

For most of that time, any inexpensive electric razor worked adequately, but as my beard turned grey I had more and more issues shaving these thicker bristly white hairs. Over the last decade or so I’ve pretty much given up on shaving at all (except for using hair clippers to keep it short) despite buying multiple razors and hoping for a good shave. For the longest time, I used a Panasonic ES8103 that left me with a shave that wasn’t so good even after passing over the same area 10-20 times. I then tried a Norelco OneBlade which actually worked ok but was comparatively messy and the blades only worked well for a short time and then required more passes to get a progressively poorer shave. And finally, the biggest waste of money was the Norelco Series 5000 which refused to shave my beard from day one. Even after a continuous 15 minutes of running it over my face still felt rough and numerous stubborn hairs remained here and there. On top of that, it was very difficult to reassemble after taking it apart to clean.
I finally decided to buy the best-rated razor on the market which was the Braun Series 9. I did not have any great expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Even with fairly long stubble as my clippers don’t cut very close the razer gave me a close shave after just one or two passes over any one area. The final result left my face smooth to the touch; a much closer shave than I’ve ever gotten from an electric razor. This razor is absurdly expensive, but if you can’t get a good shave from a cheaper model certainly give it a try. As far as the cleaner that comes with this model, it does appear to work as intended, although I will have to use it longer before I can decide if it is just a gimmick or not. If you travel a lot the case that contains an external battery should be great but I probably will use it only rarely.
My only complaint is that the instructions are completely useless. There are pages of pictograms that I couldn’t make any sense of. I had to go only to find a review that covered the same information using words.
Edit added after 2 months of use: I don’t really have much to say about the performance of the razor as it continues to shave remarkably well. My only developing concerns are in regard to cleaning. The head contains some intricate parts many of which cannot be reached with the small brush provided and I don’t think it was designed to be disassembled. This makes getting the version with the cleaning station almost obligatory. While it works pretty well this bulky device isn’t perfect. Not only is some manual cleaning required it becomes necessary to clean the cleaning device as well. So far everything remains clean enough using the cleaner with some manual cleaning but if you have OCD it will probably drive you nuts that it is difficult if not impossible to get everything inside the razor perfectly clean.

The new one is great. One small issue: the cleaning lights on the base lit from left to right on the old one – one light day one, two lights day two, three lights day three (time to run a clean cycle). The new one does the same thing, but day one is the middle light, day two is middle and right lights, and day three is all three lights. Works fine so I won’t return it, but it seems like an odd production or design quirk.

I was initially going to buy another Philips unit but decided to do some research and see what other options were out there.
After a couple of months of research I narrowed it down to the Braun Series 9 Pro 9477cc, the Panasonic Arc5 or Arc6 and the Philips S9000 Prestige.
The travel charging case is what sold me on the Braun. I’ve used it three times since I bought it. Twice on my face and once on my head. Very happy with the closeness of the shave and how quickly it got the job done.
Each shave was with 2 days stubble which is quite coarse.
I was concerned with the switch to foils whether this would cause me any discomfort. I’m pleased to say this is mot the case. It’s a very comfortable shave albeit much noisier than my previous shaver.
The instructions are just illustrations. If I’m paying for your best product I expect much better. This would probably be my only gripe so far though.

These things are built to last, and I’m a little ashamed to admit that the only reason I upgraded was because I wanted something new. I will say though the coating on this one feels more scratch-resistant, at least it still looks new after almost a couple years of use. The stand is nice to have along with the cleaning cartridges. The shave is as good as foil shavers get and the fold out trimmer is nice to have for longer hairs that the foil has trouble with. The battery last for quite a long time so I don’t charge it everyday on the stand. Perhaps my only grip with this is actually the stand, because during cleaning I find that it sprays water out the corner and makes the counter a bit wet. I have a countertop mat there so it doesn’t matter much for me, but it does get a bit annoying. It’s also pretty loud during cleaning, so maybe don’t do it if you wake up before your spouse or you got a baby in the room.
